Purpose of the invention: The Maxim gun used the energy from the recoil force to eject each spent cartridge and insert the next one.
Brief history of how it came to exist: The Maxim machine gun was more efficient, less man powering and could fire 600 rounds per minute equivalent to about 30 contemporary rifles. The machine gun constantly need water in order for it to continuously produce steam of fire. The gun was first used by the British in the First Matabele War in 1893-1894. This gun was more reliable then most crank-operated guns but had to be proven and tested thoroughly before being used.
